Canon FD 14mm T2.9 TLS lens

With their extremely wide viewing angles, Canon FD TLS wide-angle lenses have gained popularity in recent years.

These optics accentuate nearby objects by making them larger and de-emphasize those that are far away by making them smaller. The Canon FD 14mm T2.9 TLS is the shortest focal length non-fisheye super-wide lens in the Canon FD series. The viewing angle is 114° and the maximum aperture is T2.9.

The front surface of the second element has an aspherical surface. The result is an extremely compact optical system. Aberrations at close focus distances are improved by a float system; where certain elements move relative to other elements during focus. The hallmarks of super wide angle lenses in general are their wide angle of view and extended perspective.

The Canon FD 14mm TLS is the most extreme example of these features. The diagonal angle of view covered by the 14mm Canon 14mm TLS optics is 114°. To give you an idea of how much this optic picks up, that’s more than twice the 46° coverage of a 50mm optic and just under twice the 63° coverage of a 35mm optic. Unlike fisheye optics, the subject’s straight lines don’t curve like they do with fisheyes, the distance between near and far objects is exaggerated by drastically reducing the size of objects in the background.
