Canon FD 14mm T2.9 TLS lens

With its extremely wide viewing angles, the Canon FD 14mm T2.9 TLS Optics has gained popularity in recent years. This optic accentuates nearby objects by making them larger and de-emphasizes those that are far away by making them smaller. It is the wide-angle lens with the shortest focal length, without being a fisheye, in the Canon FD series.

The viewing angle is 114° and the maximum aperture is T2.9.

The front surface of the second element has an aspherical surface. The result is an extremely compact optical system. Aberrations at close focus distances are improved by a float system; where certain elements move relative to other elements during focus. The hallmarks of super wide angle lenses in general are their wide angle of view and extended perspective.

The Canon FD 14mm T2.9 TLS Optics is the most extreme example of these characteristics. The diagonal angle of view covered by the 14mm Canon 14mm TLS optics is 114°. To give you an idea of how much this optic picks up, that’s more than twice the 46° coverage of a 50mm optic and just under twice the 63° coverage of a 35mm optic. Unlike fisheye optics, the subject’s straight lines don’t curve like they do with fisheyes, the distance between near and far objects is exaggerated by drastically reducing the size of objects in the background.
