The Laowa 24mm f/14 Macro Probe lens is considered one of the weirdest lenses on the market. Capable of creating perspectives that are simply not possible with other lenses. Suitable for videographers and photographers alike, it is a full manual lens, with manual aperture and manual focus dials. Compatible with Full Frame cameras, the Laowa Probe lens’s image circle also covers Super 35mm and smaller sensors.
The Laowa Probe is the world’s first consumer lens to focus 2:1 macro to infinity with a “bug eye” perspective. The wide-angle design offers a greater depth of field. That’s useful when you’re at very close distances, producing greater background detail than conventional telephoto macro lenses.
The Laowa 24mm enables exceptionally close focus to the 2cm life-size reproduction subject at 2:1, displaying a wealth of detail and texture. But at the same time, you can enjoy a wide-angle ‘Bug Eye’ view (84.1 degree field of view) so you can include more background detail in your shots. You can easily create a very informative and amazing macro bug eye perspective that no other lens can do. The fact that you can focus really close to your subject allows for a lot of shooting possibilities.
The front barrel of the lens is waterproof with an LED ring light mounted at the tip of the lens. This allows the lens to be underwater while operating the camera out of the water, for shots in pools, streams, tanks and opens up a wealth of creative possibilities like no other lens. The long tubular tube, with a small lens tip, allows access to tight spaces and minimizes disturbance of the environment. It also allows you a safer distance when photographing dangerous reptiles, or entering areas that would be inaccessible with a standard macro kit lens.
This lens opens up possibilities unattainable with other lenses, not just with animals, but also with product photography and videography. Get closer to subjects, under, on and between objects, through tunnels and tubes, underwater, explore creative possibilities and new perspectives.
The optics are built from 27 individual lens elements arranged in 19 groups, with 7 aperture blades. It has a length of 408 mm, despite its length, it weighs less than 500 g.
