Canon HJ 21 x 7.5B IRSD

The Canon HJ 21 x 7.5B IRSD is a portable production lens with the widest field of view among standard telephoto lenses. It is a replacement for the popular HJ21 x 7.8B lens. It is a strategic member of Canon’s family of seven high-definition portable EFP lenses.

This particular lens was optimized for the highest EFP performance. Its relatively large intake section includes innovative optical compensation to reduce the focus of the breath to an extremely low level. It is intended for producers and broadcasters who have long focal length capability, a wide-angle field of view, and outstanding optical performance as a top priority. This has been achieved in a modest overall package of 5.65 pounds. The optional flexibility of Canon’s Crossover aspect ratio switching system makes it an excellent performer for standard 16:9 and 4:3 widescreen image formats.

Combining a 21x zoom range with a generous 65.2-degree horizontal wide-angle (for the 16:9 aspect ratio), this lens has proven to be an excellent workhorse that can tackle a wide range of field production projects. He is noted for his unusually low focus breathing. Its 3-group focusing system minimizes chromatic aberrations in wide-angle operation.

Design optimization strategies sought a high and balanced MTF profile across the entire image plane with an aperture setting of approximately F4.0. The relative light distribution was optimized for F2.8 and higher. This image plane brightness uniformity combines with high contrast and excellent image sharpness to produce vividly clear high-definition images. Contrast is extended with excellent control of black reproduction. With innovations in optical and mechanical design that substantially reduced flare, veiling glare, and any internal reflections. Similar attention to minimizing ghosting and other highlight-related chromatic distortions caused by strong on-axis and off-axis light sources further extends the lens’ operational contrast range.
